FAQ's

Why do people seek counseling?

People have many different motivations for coming to counseling. Some may be going through a major life transition (unemployment, divorce, new job, etc.) or are not handling stressful circumstances well.  Some people need help managing depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or low self-esteem. Counseling can help provide support and encouragement as well as skills to get through these periods.

Do I really need counseling?  I can usually handle my problems.

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated through other difficulties you've faced, there's nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. In fact, therapy is for people who have enough self-awareness to realize they need a helping hand, and that is something to be admired. You are taking responsibility by accepting where you're at in life and making a commitment to change the situation by seeking therapy. Therapy can provide long-lasting benefits and support, giving you the tools you need to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, and overcome the challenges you face.

What should I do to prepare for my first counseling session?

You will be sent paperwork for new clients. Please complete the paperwork ahead of time, and put together a list of any questions you may have, so that we can address them during your session.

What can I expect during our first counseling session?

At the beginning of our first session, I will briefly go over the new client forms and answer any questions you may have. I will then invite you to share your story and the reason/s you have chosen to seek counseling.  At the end of the session, we will reflect on what was shared and I will assist you in identifying counseling goals.

This session is an opportunity for you and I to meet each other and to decide if this is a good fit. This is important because counseling includes a collaborative relationship between the client and counselor.

How often will I need counseling?

Together, you and I will decide the frequency of sessions that works best for you. As the session’s progress, we will determine whether to increase or decrease the frequency.
